EPA recently settled a major pollution case with a cement producer on pollution controls that will reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides. Nitrogen oxides are pollutants that can lead to illnesses such as asthma and other respiratory conditions. Nitrogen oxides contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone as well as particle pollution. EPA Regional Administrator, Judith A. Enck says, “Air pollution of the type from this cement plant can lead to a number of serious health and environmental problems, including respiratory problems, heart disease, and smog.”
Cement production companies often times must acquire proper permits as required by the Clean Air Act.
